April 6, 2025 – Mumbai — The Maruti Suzuki Invicto, despite sharing its underpinnings with the popular Toyota Innova Hycross, has failed to leave a significant mark in the Indian MPV market. While Toyota continues to enjoy the strong legacy of the Innova nameplate, Maruti’s premium MPV offering, the Invicto, is struggling to find its footing—largely due to a lack of key features and limited variant choices.
In February 2025, Toyota sold 8,449 units of its Innova range (Crysta and Hycross combined), while Maruti managed to sell only 380 units of the Invicto in the same month. The numbers paint a clear picture of buyer preference, which seems heavily tilted toward Toyota’s more premium and feature-rich offering.
One of the main reasons behind this trend is brand perception. The Innova name carries immense weight in Indian households, often associated with reliability, strong build quality, and longevity. The Hycross has built on that legacy with two powertrain options—a 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 2.0-litre petrol hybrid engine—offering both power and fuel efficiency. The Invicto, however, comes only with the hybrid engine option.
Feature disparity also plays a significant role. The Innova Hycross ZX (O) variant offers features such as:
- Ottoman Seats
- Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) like Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, and Auto Emergency Braking
- Adaptive Cruise Control
- 9-speaker JBL sound system
In contrast, the Invicto Alpha Plus, its top-spec trim, misses out on most of these, offering only 6 speakers and basic cruise control. Effectively, the Invicto Alpha Plus is closer in equipment to the Hycross VX (O), not its range-topping version.
Experts believe that Maruti could potentially turn the tide by introducing a new top-end variant of the Invicto that includes the full suite of features found in the Innova Hycross ZX (O). Doing so could help position the Invicto as a more competitive alternative, especially for buyers looking for a premium MPV under the Maruti badge.
As of now, the Invicto is priced between ₹30.26 lakh and ₹34.60 lakh (on-road, Mumbai), while the Innova Hycross ranges from ₹24.63 lakh to ₹38.86 lakh, offering a broader price bracket and more flexibility for buyers.
While the Invicto shares Toyota’s trusted hybrid powertrain and core platform, it remains to be seen whether Maruti Suzuki will take decisive steps to enhance its appeal in the MPV segment. Until then, the Innova Hycross continues to reign supreme, thanks to its richer feature list and the legacy of a name every Indian family knows and trusts.
