Madurai, April 6, 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the newly constructed Pamban Bridge today, marking a significant moment in India’s infrastructure and historical legacy. The new bridge replaces the iconic 110-year-old structure that once connected the pilgrimage town of Rameswaram to the Indian mainland.
In his address, PM Modi highlighted the bridge as a symbol of modern engineering that respects India’s rich heritage. The original Pamban Bridge, commissioned in 1914, was the first sea bridge in India and an engineering marvel of its time. Elevated 12.5 meters above sea level and supported by 145 piers, it featured a unique Scherzer rolling lift span that allowed ships to pass through.
The vision of connecting India and Sri Lanka dates back to 1876, when the British explored the idea of a land link through Adam’s Bridge. However, due to high costs, the project was never realized. Instead, a railway line from Madurai to Dhanushkodi via Rameswaram, coupled with a steamer service to Sri Lanka, was approved in 1906.
After the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi departed from Madurai by a special aircraft en route to New Delhi. He had earlier arrived by helicopter for the event. At the airport, he was seen off by Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, Madurai Collector M. S. Sangeetha, Commissioner of Police J. Loganathan, Madurai Mayor Indrani Pon Vasanth, and other dignitaries.
The new Pamban Bridge stands as a testament to India’s continued pursuit of connectivity, development, and respect for historical milestones.
