Kolkata – April 6, 2025 — Senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh has stirred controversy by defending the open display of weapons during Ram Navami processions in West Bengal, calling it a “symbolic gesture” and a right of the Hindu community to protect itself. His remarks come amid growing concerns over law and order during religious rallies across the state.

Speaking at an event in Kharagpur, Ghosh asserted, “Temples are being vandalised, idols stolen, pandals set on fire… In such a situation, if Hindus step out to protect themselves, how is it a crime? What crime is it if someone carries a weapon?”

His comments followed media reports and viral videos showing participants brandishing swords and other weapons during processions in Malda, Howrah, and other districts, defying prohibitory orders and in some cases, moving without prior police permission.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has strongly condemned Ghosh’s statement. TMC MP Dola Sen responded, saying, “I have never seen such heavy police presence for Ram Navami before, but now the police are required to be vigilant,” pointing to heightened communal tensions and security risks.

In light of recent unrest, the Calcutta High Court directed the state government to ensure peaceful celebrations, allowing Ram Navami rallies but urging restraint and adherence to law.

To maintain order, the West Bengal police deployed over 5,000 personnel in Kolkata alone, with CCTVs and drones monitoring sensitive zones. Quick Response Teams (QRTs) were also stationed across districts identified as vulnerable to unrest.

The BJP, meanwhile, has accused the ruling TMC of attempting to “suppress Hindu sentiments”, saying the government’s alleged obstruction of festivities forced legal intervention.

Despite the tension, Dilip Ghosh insisted that Ram Navami will be celebrated in a grand manner, adding that it was the duty of police to facilitate peaceful observance of traditions.

As the debate deepens over religion, rights, and law enforcement, West Bengal remains on high alert, with authorities closely monitoring developments during the extended Ram Navami festivities.
