In a major political development ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) will contest the polls together under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) banner.

Speaking at a press conference in Chennai on Friday, Shah confirmed that the BJP would support AIADMK chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami as the alliance leader for the upcoming election. The press event was also attended by outgoing BJP Tamil Nadu chief K. Annamalai and Palaniswami himself.

“No Conditions Attached”

Amit Shah made it clear that no preconditions had been imposed for the alliance, and added that seat-sharing arrangements and cabinet distribution plans would be finalized in due course. “AIADMK, BJP, and all NDA alliance parties will contest the upcoming Vidhan Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu together,” he said.

Targeting the DMK

The Home Minister launched a pointed attack on the DMK, accusing it of diverting attention from pressing issues by focusing on debates around Sanatan Dharma, the three-language policy, NEET, and delimitation.

He expressed confidence that the NDA alliance would oust the MK Stalin-led DMK government and form a new government with full majority in Tamil Nadu.

A Strategic Recalibration

The alliance marks a renewed effort by the BJP to strengthen its foothold in Tamil Nadu, a state where it has historically struggled to gain traction. With AIADMK’s strong regional base and BJP’s national presence, the NDA hopes to mount a formidable challenge to the ruling DMK.

The coming months are expected to see more clarity on the alliance roadmap, including candidate selection and campaign strategies, as Tamil Nadu heads toward a high-stakes electoral battle in 2026.
