Murshidabad/Kolkata, April 16, 2025 — Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has launched a sharp attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, criticizing her “silence” amid ongoing violence in Murshidabad linked to protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act.
Speaking on Tuesday, Adityanath claimed, “Bengal is burning. The chief minister is silent and calls rioters ‘messengers of peace.’” He accused the West Bengal government of allowing rioters to act freely under the guise of secularism and demanded action to control the growing unrest.
Murshidabad has been witnessing violent clashes for the past week, with three people killed and many others displaced. Protesters reportedly torched houses and shops, prompting residents to flee to nearby Malda for safety. Violence also erupted in Bhangar (South 24 Parganas) on Monday.
The Calcutta High Court ordered the deployment of central forces, while West Bengal police have arrested over 150 individuals. Police say the situation is now under control and have urged citizens not to fall for rumours.
Mamata Banerjee responded with an appeal for calm on social media, asserting that the Waqf law was introduced by the Centre, not the state. Meanwhile, the BJP and other opposition leaders have accused Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) of minority appeasement and ignoring the plight of displaced Hindus.
The controversy adds fuel to the already heated political climate in the state ahead of upcoming elections.
